What are Foundation Degrees?

They are new two year higher education qualifications designed in consultation with employers to meet demands for highly skilled individuals able to apply knowledge of their subject in the workplace. Foundation Degrees are equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree and an NVQ level 4. A range of skills surveys estimate an increasing number of jobs for higher technicians and associate professionals - Foundation Degrees are designed to meet this need.

What are the distinctive features of Foundation Degrees?

  • Designed in conjunction with employers and sector skills councils
  • Mix of work based, specialist skills and academic learning
  • Build on individuals' previous experience
  • Focus on key economic sectors
  • Flexible study - college, workplace, home, university, on-line
  • Arrangements for guaranteed progression to an Honours Degree
  • Progression to, and in, work

Who are Foundation Degrees for?

Foundation Degrees will appeal to those thinking about studying full time or those who are working and wish to study part time. They have been designed for a broad range of students wanting to study in a vocational area which is relevant to the needs of employers with the option of progressing onto Honours Degrees or professional qualifications after a period of bridging study. Some degrees will include flexible start dates to accommodate the needs of students who have to juggle their work, studies and domestic commitments.

What will a Foundation Degree graduate offer?

Foundation Degree graduates will be work ready and able to undertake a job from day one. The Foundation Degree may also be used as part of a company's professional development scheme to upskill employees leading to greater flexibility and motivation and an impact on the organisation.

How are Foundation Degrees structured?

All participants follow a programme that includes:

  • Specialist Subject Study Designed to develop subject expertise, knowledge and skills in a given vocational area.
  • Work Based Learning, where academic credit is gained for work based learning. Work based projects and work placements provide the opportunity to apply theoretical learning in a practical way.
  • Students will also engage in Reflective Practice to assist in the completion of project courses and encourage reflective and critical thinking on work based practice.
  • Professional/Business Skills Courses that develop transferable skills such as change management, communication, project management, ICT, effective learning skills, etc.
