For higher education students, the main types of qualifications include:
HONOURS DEGREE:
These qualifications are the most popular type of HE qualification and are normally studied over three years (levels 4, 5 and 6). These qualifications tend to be academic in their focus and are assessed by coursework and exams.
FOUNDATION DEGREES:
These qualifications generally last for two years and are designed in consultation with employers to ensure the demand of highly skilled employees is met. These qualifications are at level 4 and 5, and equate to the first two years of an Honours Degree. Assessment predominantly comes in the form of work-related coursework.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES /DIPLOMAS :
These qualifications are an extension of the BTEC qualifications mentioned in the further education section. They focus on specialised vocational subjects with a strong work-related bias. These qualifications are predominantly assessed via coursework, although exams are popular in some subject areas. With the exception of Public Services, all students commence their studies at the HNC level. However the option of following a HND over three years on a part-time basis is available on some programmes and, where this is the case, extra modules are delivered during the HNC phase of the programme.

These qualifications focus on the needs of a specific profession such as Accountancy or Teaching. Generally, these qualifications are needed to ensure career progression and standing within the relevant profession. Assessment comes in many forms and depends on the subject being followed – some are more exam-focused, other more coursework-focused. These qualifications range from level 4 to level 7.
