Innovative Apprenticeship Programme

Hartlepool College of Further Education have worked closely with Cleveland Fire Brigade Risk Management Services to create an opportunity for ten new recruits to start an exciting career in high-risk safety management. CFB Risk Management, which is based within the Brigade’s headquarters on Queens Meadow Business Park in Hartlepool, is a community interest company which reinvests profits back into the local area.

The business specialises in health and safety for several firms, many of them based in the high-risk chemicals sector across the Tees Valley. Hartlepool College of Further Education will work alongside the business to provide the training, with successful applicants gaining qualifications including BTEC, Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). T

The bespoke programme will see the ten recruits complete a three-month training course before joining an on-site protection team and working towards an NVQ qualification through the College. Ian Hayton, Managing Director at CFB Risk Management, said: “Our commercial success over the last four years has enabled us to provide this opportunity for ten young people from across the local community. We protect local firms, in particular the high hazard industrial customers where we reduce the risk of fires, explosions and leaks. These particular jobs will see the successful candidate play a key part in the emergency response to site incidents, including the rescue of site personnel, provision of first aid and general security. They will also be responsible for the testing and maintenance of equipment as well as taking an active role in reviewing risk assessments. We are delighted to have been able to join forces with Hartlepool College of Further Education and we look forward to welcoming in the ten new recruits.”

Darren Hankey, Principal at Hartlepool College of Further Education, added: “Hartlepool College of FE has a long and well-established track record of providing apprenticeships – we’re one of the biggest in the North East and most successful in England. This partnership with CFB Risk Management is an innovative one, and demonstrates how we work closely with key partners to meet the demands of their industry.”
