Target audience 

The level 1 qualification is developed to give students the opportunity to engage in learning which is relevant to a
future in Fabrication & Welding as well as Engineering. It will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and
techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life

Entry requirements 

No entry qualifications required for the course but students gaining grades 1-3 or D-F are the normal target audience.
Willingness to work, good previous school/college attendance and commitment to the course is very beneficial

Course content 

This full time course provides both the practical and theory components
which a Fabrication and Welding Engineer would require in order to carry our a
range of tasks and responsibilites:-

  • Unit 1: Working Safely in Engineering

  • Unit 2: Developing Skills in Making Engineering Components Using Hand

  • Unit 3: Developing Skills in Using a Bench/Pedestal Drilling Machine

  • Unit 4: Developing Skills in Planning and Making a Machined Product

  • Unit 6: Developing Skills in Joining Materials Using Welding

  • Unit 11: Starting Work in Engineering

  • Unit 12: Searching for a Job

  • Unit 13: Applying for a Job

  • Unit 14: Preparing for an Interview

  • Unit 20: Interpreting and Using Engineering Information

  • Unit 21: Engineering Marking Out
Assessment criteria 

Assessment covers practical workshop abilities plus evidence of work completed in the workshop. Units will also be
assessed by the completion of assignments/logbook, graded at Pass level only


Progression onto the BTEC level 2 in Engineering or C&G level 2 2850 Diploma in Fabrication & Welding and a work
related apprenticeship

Other information 

All personal protective equipment (PPE) will be supplied by the college. There is no specialist equipment required for
this course however students are required to provide their own pens, pencils, paper and files for course notes, which
are expected to be maintained in an organised and tidy manner. Students will ALWAYS be expected to turn up to
lectures and tutorials with these materials

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course. The only courses available to enrol online are Full Cost courses, if you wish to enrol on any other course please call into Student Services or call 01429 295000.
