Hartlepool College of Further Education is providing an exciting new programme of study which includes students having a choice of academic opportunities to suit their individual needs. The intent of the CHOICES programme is to support students who may have difficulties in managing their emotions and behaviour (BESD) and may have found their previous educational setting a challenge. The programme will be taught in a small learning environment to help support all individual needs and allow students to take advantage of the learning opportunities the course can offer and encourage their aspirations within a person-centred planning approach
An informal interview
The course encourages students to make connections to cross-curricular offers within the college to support their deeper learning and understanding. Offering a broad range of opportunities for all students will develop their full potential and prepare steps to progress into a vocational programme of study upon completion. The course has an emphasis on the individual's personal interests and seeks to look for those gaps within their previous learning to be able to enhance and develop those skills further. The course will also include the development of confidence-building, teamwork and communication to support their emotions and behavioural difficulties and a further look at their progression, future interests and employment opportunities
Various teaching and learning approaches and activities will be completed throughout the course to allow students to gain the skills and qualities needed to progress
Students will create a portfolio which will include a range of assessment methods (practical/written)
Upon completion, the student will progress to a vocational area suitable for their individual needs
