Target audience 

Students who have completed a full Level 3 qualification and have at least 40 – 48 UCAS points.

Adults who have previous life and work experience and would like a change in career and already have Level 3 qualification.

Staff who already work in the industry and would like to develop into a management role in their career or improve their level of understanding and achieve a foundation degree.

This course is an award of Teesside University delivered in partnership with Hartlepool College. Designed in partnership with employers, it gives you a solid theoretical and practical understanding of aviation travel and tourism management, enabling you to progress to higher-level studies or directly into industry. You have the chance to apply what you learn to your own workplace experience.

Entry requirements 

A typical offer is 40-48 tariff points and GCSE grade 4 in Mathematics and English.  The entry criteria are based on your ability to succeed and can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including: 

  • a range of Level 3 qualifications (NCFE Diploma, NVQ 3, BTEC Award, A Level)
  • appropriate training through work
  • Mathematics and English at GCSE grade 4 or above (or equivalent)
Course content 

Managing Service Standards in the Aviation, Travel & Tourism Sector - this module starts to develop your knowledge with the importance of good service in this dynamic industry how to manage a team and coach them to provide this service

Sales & Marketing considers the theories and the imperative nature of marketing correctly in this industry, this module requires you to understand and present from a management perspective

Managing & Developing People considers the importance of managing your staff with equality and diversity and the importance of this, it examines employment laws and starts to develop your academic writing with an essay

The Work Environment and Self-analysis requires you to establish a relationship with an organisation and reflect on your own skills and how they meet their objectives

Aviation Services introduces you to the world of aviation and career possibilities, with key milestones, size and scope of the industry, operational requirements of passenger service operations and effective communication

UK Tourism - Diversity and Importance this module examines the diverse nature of tourism in this country

The Level 5 modules start to enhance skills and knowledge from Level 4 but continues to allow choice of industry

Current Global Issues in Aviation Travel & Tourism really allows an in-depth study of a sector of your choice in the industry (Aviation, Travel or Tourism)

The Events in The Industry module requires you to work together successfully to plan and implement a live event and then reflect on it.  This develops your personal aims from work environment Level 4, and self-evaluation

Managing Airport and Airline Operations follows on from Aviation Services at Level 4 and continues to study this industry specifically.  It gives an in-depth insight into the world of aviation and the role of senior crew

Aviation and Travel Technology analyses the development and importance of E-Business within the aviation and travel industries

Finally, the Industry Related Project module develops the skills required to be successful in your top-up degree.  This links directly from the Level 4 module The Work Environment and Self-Analysis and the relationship formed with the industry.  Work experience is required/encouraged to support your research knowledge

Teaching & Learning 

You gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the aviation travel and tourism industry as well as a range of practical, professional, and key transferable skills required for graduate employability and lifelong learning.

Assessment criteria 

The knowledge and skills developed through the course are assessed in a variety of ways, using both in-course and end assessments. Methods include reports, essays, projects, case studies, role play scenarios, individual or group presentation, group activity and a personal development portfolio

Progression 

Top up degree level 6.

The aviation, travel and tourism industry are a vast, dynamic industry offering a wide range of career opportunities. Typical areas of the industry which you could progress into include tour operations (UK and overseas), conference and events management, travel agency operations, aviation sector (airlines and airports), public sector tourism in the UK (tourist boards, regional development agencies and tourist information centres), attractions management (UK and overseas), transport provision, hospitality sector management and tourist guiding services.
You may also further your studies and progress to the BA (Hons) International Tourism Management (Top-up), Airline & Airport Management (top-Up).

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course.
