Consultations with the emergency services, armed forces and employers have endorsed and the FdA reflects the changing environment of the emergency services and armed forces. This programme has been created in consultation with a variety of employers in the Public Services sector. These employers have made suggestions to the content in relation to sector demands and areas for development for employees such as the Director of Training at the International Fire Training Centre as well as Her Majesties Armed Forces.
The FdA programme has taken into consideration the potential future developments in the Policing Degree structure which is the recognised progression route upon completion of the programme.
The aim of the programme is to equip individuals with knowledge, understanding and skills for success in employment in the public services industry. The programme also enables progression to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in public services or related area by providing opportunities for specialist study relevant to individual vocations and contexts. The FdA will help develop the individual's ability in the public services industry through effective use and combination of the knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme. The FdA also provides flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development in public services.
A Levels (60 points); BTEC Extended/Subsidiary Diploma in a relevant subject; Level 3 Apprenticeship in a relevant subject area or where applicable a NVQ Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject.
Other comparable qualifications including professional qualifications related to the public services and/or relevant work experience.
The academic requirement may be offset by three years recent and substantial relevant industrial experience. Applicants who do not hold relevant Level 3 qualifications or equivalents will have the opportunity for their application to be discussed with the admissions tutor and the employer to ensure that students are able to meet the academic challenges of the programme.
The programme is structured the same for each academic year with Year 1 and Year 2 containing three core modules and three optional modules each year. These modules include: Practical Outdoor Skills, Emergency Planning, Human and Criminal Behaviour, Crimes of Violence and Practical Outdoor Management.
The FdA in Public Services will provide a variety of innovative and inspiring teaching and learning methods to ensure learners fulfil their potential. With a foundation drawn from the regular work based experiences, each module will be grounded by methods of both lecture and seminar to provide the theoretical knowledge. Methods such as simulation, discussion, workshop and practical strategies will be carefully chosen to ensure the key learning outcomes of each module are achieved with success.
A range of assessment methods are used within the programme. The aim is to achieve critical and evaluative learning through which knowledge and understanding is developed through theory and practice. Both the task and the assessment criteria will be clearly explained to students within the module outline and within the assessment brief.
The progression routes upon successful completion of the FdA programme include direct entry onto the Policing Degree or progression into employment.
The course will be delivered on a full time basis and part-time basis. When delivered on a part-time basis all students will be required to be either employed or volunteering at some point during the rest of the week. They will also be required to complete all assessments autonomously within their own weekly schedules.
