Target audience

These qualifications are aimed at people who wish to enter into the welding industry or wish to take up welding as a hobby, but who have little or no experience in this field. It will enable people to gain the basic competences, skills and knowledge of differing processes and specialise in an area of their choice.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking this qualification; however centres must ensure that candidates have the potential and opportunity to successfully gain the qualification. These qualifications are not approved for use by candidates under the age of 16.

Course content

A practical workshop, involving the assessment of Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (TIG), Metal Inert Gas Welding (MIG) and Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA) activities, including knowledge assessment. Emphasis should be on the safe working practices applied to each particular welding process and environment. The course allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the engineering sector.

Assessment criteria

Five practical assignments and one oral knowledge test per unit qualification

Progression

LEVEL 1: On completion of the L1 qualification students can progress onto the L2 Award in Introductory Welding. LEVEL 2: Following the successful completion of the L2 students can progress into employment or complete a coded welding test.

Other information

It is appropriate that the learner would complete the Level 1 Award before progressing to the Level 2 Awards
