This course is for learners 16-18 and 19+ (subject to interview) seeking a career as an employed or self-employed Hairdresser. You will gain confidence when working with clients and develop communication and social skills within a working environment. You must have excellent personal presentation attributes and be able to work well as a team and individually. As part of your qualification you will be required to complete a GCSE or functional skill in Maths or English.

- a successful interview and a reference from previous school or employment or a character reference is required
This qualification will prepare you for either an introduction into the hairdressing industry or supervised employment in hairdressing working as an apprentice for further study at Level 2. Learners will develop their skills studying a wide range of units which include:
- Health and Safety
- Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
- Communication Skills
- Shampoo and Conditioning
- Temporary Colour
- Styling and Dress Hair
- Reception and Retail
- Promote Services
- Plaiting/Twisting Hair
Age 16-18 students are required to study a Maths and English qualification to further develop their skills.
Learners will be assessed in knowledge of theory through assignments, exams and oral questioning. Practical assessments consist of practical examinations on paying clients in a real working environment. Students are required to provide clients for formative and summative practical examination purposes and develop a personal clientele to support their development and training. All hairdressing services will incur a charge. Evidence may also include photographs.
On successful competion of Level 1 Hairdressing learners can progress to Level 2 Hairdessing (interview required)
All learners are required to follow the industry codes of practice for salon dress. Learners will be required to purchase a uniform and a relevant hairdressing kit to support their studies. Financial support is available; see Student Services for details.
