Target audience 

This qualification is aimed towards people who wish to enter into the Fabrication & Welding industry, but who have very little or no experience in this field. It will enable people to gain basic competences, skills and knowledge of the differing processes and specialized areas which make up this trade area.

Entry requirements 

Employed status preferred or Maths & English at grade A*-C. Will be required to attend an interview with tutor.

Course content 

Emphasis is placed on the theoretical approach to delivery with only the
minimum amount of practical. The course is made up of two mandatory units and
four specialist units:

Mandatory Units


  • Developing Self and Working Safely with Others on Engineering Activities
  • Selecting Materials, Moving Loads and Applying Quality Control
    Procedures
Specialist Units

  • Joining Materials by Metal Inert Gas Welding and Manual Metal Arc Welding
  • Producing Fabricated Assemblies Using Thick Place, Bar and Section
  • Using Thermal Cutting Equipment
  • Producing Sheetmetal Components and Assemblies
Assessment criteria 

A variety of assessment methods are used including:

  • Assignments
  • Portfolios of Evidence
  • Multiple-Choice End Tests
  • Exams for Functional Skills
  • Online Tests
  • Practical Synoptic Tests
Progression 

Following the successful completion of the City & Guilds 2850 Level 2 in Fabrication & Welding, students will hopefully advance on to the City and Guilds 2850 Level 3 Certificate in Fabrication & Welding which is a more indepth look at industry and its processes.

Other information 

Students will have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities, visits and skills competitions, when/if held.

Application & Enrolment

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course. The only courses available to enrol online are Full Cost courses, if you wish to enrol on any other course please call into Student Services or call 01429 295000.
