Target audience 

This course targets those working or volunteering as Teaching Assistants in primary, secondary or special schools.

Entry requirements 

Over 16 years of age and GCSE at grade 3 or above, or equivalent qualification. Students should be working in a school at a Key Stage (between 1 and 4) on either paid, voluntary or placement basis.

Course content 

There are 9 core mandatory units which make up 24 credits and a minimum of 6 credits from the optional units. Examples of units are:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people's health and safety
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Support learning activities
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people and schools as organisations
Teaching & Learning 

The certificate will guide and assess development of knowledge and skills relating to the work required as a teaching assistant.

Assessment criteria 

A variety of assessment methods are used including:

  • Reflection
  • Written Assignments
  • Observation of Performance within Practical Settings
  • Questioning
  • Witness Testimonies
  • Discussion

On successful completion of this course, students can progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.

Other information 

All students must demonstrate practical experience within a real work environment. They must be employed or have a placement within a suitable environment for at least two days per week. All students will attend one 3 hour taught class each week. There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework and assessment work.

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course.
