This course is aimed at school leavers or students progressing from a suitable Level 1 programme who wish to enter a general engineering course consisting of Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical, Process, Chemical or Manufacturing.
5 GCSEs grade 'D' or above.
The learner will complete nine individual units over the course of one year:
- The Engineered World
- Investigating an Engineered Product
- Engineering Materials
- Machining Techniques
- Electronic Circuit Design and Construction
- Interpreting & Using Engineering Information
- Mathematics for Engineers
- Electrical & Mechanical Science for Engineers
- Engineering Design
Students will also take part in a taught tutorial and skills enrichment programme.
The Extended Certificate in Engineering will make learners better qualified and will improve their prospects for vocational/academic progress and their prospect of employment. This course has elements of theory and practical.
Work for the units in the programme will be assessed by a variety of
methods including assignments, short tests and case studies. All assessment is
criterion referenced. This means that in each assessment you will be given a
printed list of what you have to do to achieve a particular grade. The grades
that you can achieve in assessments are:
Pass grade in all assessments for that unit. On completion of each unit, a unit
grade is awarded for the overall performance, taking into account the grades for
assessed work throughout the unit. To be awarded the qualification you must
obtain at least a Pass grade in all the units.
Work for seven of the
units are assessed by assignments and two of the units are assessed by exams.
Assessment covers practical workshop abilities plus evidence of work completed
in the workshop. Units will also be assessed by the completion of
When you have successfully completed your programme of study you will hold a qualification that is nationally recognised by employers and further / higher education centres. You will then be able to progress to a range of Level 3 engineering courses.
Students have the opportunity to participate in numerous enrichment activities such as overnight residentials and day visits and when possible gain site experience with local companies.
