This programme is aimed at learners who have completed the Level 2 automotive engineering programme and wish to further develop their craft and practical skills, with a view to progressing to apprenticeships and employment.
Prospective learners are required to have a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles. Alternative entry qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
The Level 3 automotive engineering programme consists of a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles and a mandatory tutorial session. Learners without a GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in English and/or Maths will be required to complete a suitable qualification in these areas alongside their engineering course.
The City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma has been designed to further develop learners' knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to progress into apprenticeships, employment and further study within the automotive sector.
Learners will complete units covering health and safety, good workshop practice, job roles within the industry, common ancillary skills used in vehicle fitting, light vehicle engine systems, light vehicle chassis systems, light vehicle transmission systems and light vehicle electrical systems.
The mandatory tutorial session will allow learners to interact with their assigned tutor for progress and development, as well as engage with the Hartlepool College of Further Education tutorial programme.
A variety of teaching strategies will be employed in delivering this qualification, dependent upon the unit content. This may include lectures, seminars, practical work, simulated work environments and group activities.
Teaching and learning activities will take place in a range of specialist facilities, laboratories and classrooms.
The programme is delivered on a full-time basis; classes will be taught Monday to Friday.
Assessment is at unit-level and consists of a number of assignments and multiple-choice tests.
The overall qualification will be graded either Pass/Fail, dependent on the outcomes of the individual units assessments.
Upon successful completion of this programme of study, learners will hold qualifications that are recognised nationally by further and higher education establishments, as well as employers and other stakeholders. This will enable them to progress to employment, apprenticeships and further study.
This could include Level 4 qualifications in advanced automotive subjects.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to learners for use
in the workshop.
