Target audience 

This qualification meets the needs of learners who work or want to work in
a wide range of settings, for example in the roles of:-


  • Early Years Educator

  • Nursery Practitioner

  • Nursery Worker/Supervisor

  • Nursery Nurse/Nursery Teaching Assistant delivering the Early Years
    Foundation Stage within a maintained school setting

Learners will learn, develop and practise skills required for employment and
progression in the Early Years sector

Entry requirements 


  • Possession of a relevant Level 2 appropriate qualification

  • Learners should be at least 16 years old

  • 2 days placement in an Early Years setting (paid or voluntary) is
    essential

  • Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths upon completion of the
    course

  • A police clearance check will be necessary
Course content 

There are 17 mandatory units including:

  • Developing effective Study Skills
  • Promote partnership working with parents
  • Model, promote and support positive behaviour with children
  • Principles of safeguarding policies and procedures in early years settings
  • Promoting diversity, equality and inclusion in the early years sector
  • Working in partnership with colleagues and other professionals in early years settings
  • Plan and implement activities, play opportunities and educational programmes in an early years setting
  • Promoting children's health and welfare in an early years setting
  • Promoting the health and safety of children
  • Promote children's speech, language and communication development
  • Support organisational requirements for recording, storing and disclosing information and providing reports in an early years setting
  • Supporting children's creative and imaginative play and experiences
  • Supporting children experiencing transitions and significant events in the early years sector
  • Continuous professional development using reflective practice in the early years sector
  • Theories which underpin practice in the early years sector
  • Child development from conception to 7 years
  • Observation and assessment in the early years sector
Assessment criteria 

A variety of assessment methods will be used including, written assignments, reflective accounts, witness testimonies, professional discussions and direct observations within practical settings. Learners will complete an e-portfolio of evidence. Access to a computer is essential. Students will attend College once a week for the underpinning knowledge of the course.

Progression 

There is an opportunity to access higher level jobs within the sector, e.g. Nursery Supervisor, Nursery Manager, Pre-school Manager/Co-ordinator.  There is also an opportunity to go onto further study at higher levels, particularly working towards foundation degrees in Early Years.

Other information 

There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, reflection, evaluation, directed study, research and assessment. Please think carefully before undertaking a course of this nature as it is demanding and students will need to consider their work, family and other commitments.

Application & Enrolment

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course. The only courses available to enrol online are Full Cost courses, if you wish to enrol on any other course please call into Student Services or call 01429 295000.
