This course is aimed at individuals progressing from suitable Level 2 programmes who may wish to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to higher education. The programme provides a broad overview of the engineering sector.
Students must have as a minimum: 5 GCSEs at grade 'C' or above including English, Maths and Science OR BTEC First Diploma in Engineering or equivalent.
This programme consists of two engineering disciplines (Mechanical and Electrical) and the 18 units are usually completed over two years. Students must pass 18 units in order to complete the Extended Diploma.
This Subsidiary/Extended Diploma programme will make learners better qualified and will improve their prospects for vocational/academic progress and their prospect of employment. This course has elements of practical and theory.
Work for the units in the programme will be assessed by a variety of methods including assignments, short tests and case studies. All assessment is criterion referenced. This means that in each assessment you will be given a printed list of what you have to do to achieve a particular grade.
Upon successful completion of the programme of study, learners will hold a qualification that is recognised nationally by further and higher education centres and by employers. Students will be able to progress to higher education courses (Higher National Programmes, Foundation Degrees and Degree Level).
There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework and assessment work. Students will take part in a taught tutorial programme and will have the opportunity to participate in educational visits.
