Students who wish to prepare for a career in the Aeronautical industry or progress to Higher Education.
This course typically targets school leavers, however the course is designed for any age with appropriate qualifications, apprenticeship or other related engineering professions.
5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C or an appropriate Level 2 qualification.
The content on this course covers a wide range of topics including theory
of flight, aircraft propulsion and avionics. Practical elements such as aircraft
maintenance are carried out on two Jet Provosts and a Gazelle helicopter. The
learner must complete 18 units to complete the Extended Diploma:

This programme aims to combine theoretical and practical skills, bringing together the various elements of the topics that are used within an aeronautical environment. Students will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods including classroom-based and practical sessions. External aeronautical engineering practices are also an integral part of the course.
A variety of assessment methods are used including assignments, time-constrained assessments and practical exercises.
The course will prepare students for direct entry into employment in the aeronautical industry or for progression into Higher Education, for example - the HND in Aeronautical, BEng in Aerospace Engineering or an Aviation License.
During the first year of the course, you may be invited to an Aerospace-related industrial visit. The second year students may be invited to attend a residential in Toulouse to look at the Airbus A380 facility and experience the airport environment behind the scenes.
The college has a progression agreement with Newcastle Aviation Academy and will have visits to their facility at Newcastle Airport. Careers advice will be given on progression into civil aviation.
RAF Leeming hosts second year students to experience an Operational Flying Squadron.
- You are required to provide your own pens, paper and files for course notes, which are expected to be maintained in an organised and tidy manner
- A scientific calculator will also be essential
- You will always be expected to turn up to lectures/tutorials with these materials
- A range of facilities is provided by the College to support your course, such as:
- computer hardware and software
- aircraft hardware
- laboratory equipment and workshops
- In addition, protective clothing in the form of overalls, glasses and ear defenders will also be provided
