Target audience 

This is for students who want to pursue a career in policing. They will be given all the skills and information that
will enable them to progress on to higher education in policing studies, or the policing apprenticeship route. This
course will also appeal to students who have an interest in pursuing a career in law, criminology, forensic
science, or the criminal justice system. It will also equip students who wish to go directly in to the security industry
or Prison service through providing relevant work experience opportunities throughout the course.
This programme carries 180 UCAS points that can be used to progress on to university.

Entry requirements 

  • 16-18 years only (non fundable for 19+)
  • 5 grade 5's or above, and at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and English
Course content 

This broad and diverse course includes:

  • Social Sciences
  • Law
  • Introduction to Policing studies and relevant divisions
  • Physical and mental fitness and practical activities

Specific subjects include:

  • Influence of UK Government
  • UK Legal Systems
  • Neighbourhood policing
  • Crime scene investigation
  • Prepare for a career in the police Emergency planning and response in the Public service
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Preparation for Higher Education
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Development of UK police service
  • Understand mental health

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of outdoor and physical activities in units such as understanding physical and mental wellbeing and develop aspects of physical fitness for entry in to the Police service.  Students will also undertake the relevant GCSE Maths and English as well as have the opportunity to participate in numerous additional qualifications.  These are designed to enhance employability skills and include paid opportunities such as Stewarding at events and working alongside serving officers.  There are also additional voluntary opportunities to support the local community.

 

Teaching & Learning 

This programme aims to combine theoretical and practical skills, bringing together the various elements of the topics mentioned that are used within the Police force. Students will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods including classroom-based and practical sessions. Although this is an academic based vocational course there are weekly opportunities to participate in practical sessions throughout the two year programme.
