Target audience

This programme is aimed at learners who have completed the Level 2 Fabrication & Welding programme and wish to further develop thier craft and practical skills, with a view to progressing to apprenticeships and employment.

Entry requirements

Prospective learners are required to have a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication & Welding). Alternative entry qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Course content

The Level 3 Fabrication and Welding (craft route) programme consists of a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication & Welding) and a mandatory tutorial session.  Learners without a GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in English and/or Maths will be required to complete a suitable qualification in these areas alongside their engineering course.

The City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma has been designed to further develop learners' knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to progress into apprenticeships, employment and further study within the Fabrication and Welding sector.

Learners will complete units covering:

  • working in health & safety
  • engineering principles
  • fabrication and welding principles
  • platework fabrication
  • manual metal arc welding
  • pattern development

Learners will also have an additional Fabrication & Welding workshop session, to further hone their skills in the field.

The mandatory tutorial session will allow learners to interact with their assigned tutor for progress and development, as well as engage with the Hartlepool College of Further Education tutorial programme.

Teaching & Learning

A variety of teaching strategies will be employed in delivering this qualification, dependant upon the unit content.  This may include lectures, seminars, practical work, simulated work environments and group activities.

Teaching and learning activities will take place in a range of specialist facilities, laboratories and classrooms.

The programme is delivered on a full-time basis; classes will be taught Monday to Friday.

Assessment criteria

Assessment is at unit-level and is a combination of coursework and examinations. Two units are assessed by online multiple-choice exams. All other units are assessed with short-answer assignment questions and/or practical activities. Each assessment component is graded either Pass, Merit or Distinction.

The overall qualification will be graded either Pass/Fail, based on the combination of the individual unit outcomes.

Progression

Upon successful completion of this programme of study, learners will hold qualifications that are recognised nationally by further and higher education establishments, as well as employers and other stakeholders.  This will enable them to progress to employment, apprenticeships and further study.

Suitable progression opportunities within the School of Engineering include:

  • Level 3 Fabrication & Welding - Academic Route (Pearson BTEC Level 3 Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering)
Other information

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to learners for use in the workshop.
