Target audience 

This course targets those students who wish to prepare for a career in the sport and fitness industry or for direct progression to Higher Education.

Entry requirements 

Four GCSEs at grade 9 to 4 or an equivalent qualification in a related subject area including English and Maths (preferable Science).

Course content 

The programme consists of a variety of theory lectures and seminars, practical sports and coaching activities, fitness suite based sessions and several other module specific scenarios.

In addition students will be given extra opportunities to volunteer and gain experience in the sports and fitness industries and may gain additional qualifications such as Fitness Instructor qualifications and coaching badges. You will also be encouraged to take part and get involved with the college sports activities/teams that are structured throughout college.

Teaching & Learning 

This programme aims to combine theoretical and practical skills, bringing together the various elements of the topics mentioned above that are used within a Sport and/or Fitness environment. You will be required to participate in oral presentations, external visits, residential, tutorials and group work. As a student you will be expected to use a range of textbooks, the internet and other learning resources for research.

Students will develop their literacy and numeracy skills either through the completion of GCSE/Functional Skills qualifications or through attending development sessions suitable to the Sport/Fitness sector. Opportunities to develop wider skills are encouraged through volunteering and enrichment opportunities.

Assessment criteria 

A variety of assessment methods are used including assignments, exams (GCSE/Functional Skills) and practical exercises. The use of video analysis, written feedback and peer observations are utilised to provide a more interactive assessment method.

Progression 

Successful students often progress to higher education at one of the countries top universities or on an educational/sporting scholarship to America. Progression in to the sport/fitness industry is also available by combining this qualification with other short courses.

Other information 

Students will have the opportunity to participate in numerous enrichment activities that benefit their studies and make studying at college more enjoyable.

Options to complete additional qualifications such as First Aid, Coaching badges, fitness related qualification etc. are also available.

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course.
