Target audience 

  • Learners aged 16+
  • Those who wish to further their careers in sports massage with adults
  • Those who wish to work independently within their own clinical practice
Entry requirements 

  • Learners must hold the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage or equivalent
  • There is an element of communication involved (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 3
  • Performing sports massage is a physical activity and learners will need to be fit enough to carry this out
Course content 

To provide learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to:

  • Understand the clinical procedures for client assessment and treatment planning
  • Conduct objective physical assessments
  • Understand the purpose of neuromuscular and tissue mobilisation techniques in sports massage and the skills to be able to apply effective neuromuscular and tissue mobilisation techniques
  • Utilise soft tissue techniques appropriate to specific clients
  • Understand treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair

 

Teaching & Learning 

Mostly teaching and learning will consist of building on the skills from the Level 3 qualification, in terms of evidence-based practice. Providing the learner with more up-to-date competencies in their assessment practice. Therefore, learners will need to work closely with each other (practice) and external (clients) to achieve. There will be lots of demonstration, case studies and practical based teaching and learning. Guest speakers and lecturers will be sourced to build upon the professional development of the learner, as well as gain valuable experience in new techniques and modalities. The teaching will also build upon the scientific understanding of certain body systems. This will be covered with lessons which are built around practical techniques which have a physiological affect.

Assessment criteria 

Assessment will be in the form of:

  • Unit 1 - Worksheet, 6 observations, and a critical evaluation
  • Unit 2 - Assignment, 5 observations, and a critical evaluation
  • Unit 3 - Worksheet
Progression 

  • BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy
  • BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course.
