The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an 'in service' qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. This qualification is suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment.
- It is recommended to hold Level 2 qualifications in Mathematics and English Language, but the latter is essential
- Candidates must be willing to undertake an initial assessment of their skills in English, record their development needs and follow an action plan to address them where necessary
- The minimum age requirement for the Certificate in Education and Training is 18 years
- All candidates (whether pre-service or in-service) must have access to 30 hours of teaching
- A Level 3 qualification in a subject that you aim to teach
Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.
The course is classroom-based. Weekly sessions are delivered by experienced tutors who will demonstrate best practice in the delivery of the course content. This course is designed to encourage learners to acquire knowledge and skills which are essential foundations for being an effective practitioner.
To pass the Level 4 Certificate you will need to complete written assignments for each unit studied and undertake teaching practice and observations.
On successful completion, students may progress to Teesside University Cert Ed/PGCE programmes subject to an interview and the completion of a bridging module.
There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework and assessment tasks. Please think carefully before undertaking a course of this nature as it is demanding and students will need to consider their work, family and other commitments. An interview is required to be accepted onto the programme.
