Target audience 

The part-time programme of study is aimed at those who wish to gain a specialist L3 vocational qualification in the Art and Design sector. This course is primarily designed to progress students to higher education qualifications in Art and Design across a one year part-time curriculum.

Students will be tutored and educated in a series of traditional and digital art and design techniques and processes across a variety of art & design disciplines, and can study from a graphic design, product design, interior architecture or digital multimedia programme. The L3 Access to HE Art & Design Pathway is validated by One Awards.

Entry requirements 

For learners who have recently been in education, the profile is likely to include one of the following:

  • A BTEC Level 2 qualification in Art & Design in a related vocational area
  • A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grade A*-C
  • Other related Level 2 qualifications
  • A Level qualifications in the appropriate sector
  • Related work experience

Applicants must be aware that there are units to be undertaken to improve written work in readiness for higher education. They will have to undertake further study in other subjects such as English Language written skills, study skills and communication skills as part of their programme of study in addition to the main 'core' qualification.

Course content 

Units offered will look to improve a student's ability across a range of
disciplines which we


Students will also learn to work as a team, manage time, take responsibility
for their own work and become self-reliant. There is an expectation that
students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework
and assessment tasks.

Assessment criteria 

Assessment during and at the end of each module is classroom/home based.

All assessment is internally set and marked against One Award set criteria. Each unit is graded at either Pass, Merit or Distinction with an overall grade awarded on the successful completion of all modules.


Students have the opportunity to progress directly onto a Hartlepool College of FE Foundation Degree in Design for Creative Industries. There are the wider opportunities of degrees in Graphic Design, Games Design and other related arts degree courses available through local higher educational institutes, such as Cleveland College of Design and Teesside University.

The college will recruit learners to the One Award qualifications with integrity.

It is expected that students will make every effort to attend all sessions. Students must have a commitment to completing the course. Those with work and/or family commitments should be aware of the duration of the course and the need to attend all classes.

The college will take appropriate steps to assess each applicant's potential and make a professional judgement about their ability to complete the programme of study successfully and achieve the qualification. This will include ensuring that applicants have appropriate information and advice about the qualification and that the qualification will meet their needs.

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course. The only courses available to enrol online are Full Cost courses, if you wish to enrol on any other course please call into Student Services or call 01429 295000.
