A programme of study aimed at those returning to education. Designed to progress students to a level enabling them to embark on a degree course. The Access to Humanities programme is validated by Aim Awards.
Acceptance onto the course is based upon a successful interview, previous qualifications and the results of diagnostic assessments in both English and Mathematics. It is expected that students will be working mainly at Level 2 in both English and Mathematics.
Identification and qualifications will be requested at interview.
This course includes the following modules/units:
- English and Academic Skills for Higher Education
- Mathematics-Number
- Mathematics-Data Handling and Statistics
- English Language Studies
- History
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Crime & Deviance
All units must be completed in order to achieve the award.
This course is predominantly classroom-based and students will be exposed to a variety of teacher-centred and student-centred/teacher-facilitated activities. There is an expectation that, over time, students will become more independent in terms of sourcing their own learning materials.
Assessment is ongoing throughout the year. Students will complete a portfolio of work.
On completion of the Access programme, students can apply for a range of Higher Education courses. Entry requirements for Higher Education programmes can differ between institutions and staff will discuss these requirements at interview, as some universities expect students to have a grade 4 or above in Maths/English/Science.
There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework and assessment tasks. Please think carefully before undertaking a course of this nature as it is demanding and students will need to consider their work, family and other commitments.
