Hartlepool College of Further Education aims to be one of the leading colleges in the Tees Valley, East Durham and beyond for the provision of high quality professional and technical education. It is now seeking to recruit additional governors to be a part of achieving those aims. The College’s history dates back to 1849 and its current mission is Excellence in Further and Higher Education to Transform Students’ Lives.

The College has several vacancies on its Governing Body and is looking to fill these with people from diverse backgrounds and experience with a strong commitment to further and higher education. Previous experience as a Trustee or Further Education governor is helpful but not essential. It is also looking to appoint a Chair in 2021.

We are particularly interested in strengthening our Board in the following skills areas:

  • Financial
  • Legal
  • Estates.
  • HE and FE Education
  • Audit

Good oral communication skills, the ability to think and plan strategically and monitor performance and outcomes, and interpret different forms of information, including reports and data, are all necessary. All Governors are also expected to share a commitment to safeguarding and health and safety of students and staff.

The role is unpaid but reasonable expenses can be reimbursed. Benefits of the role include helping to transform lives through education, working collaboratively with an enthusiastic group of governors, and gaining boardroom experience for personal and professional development.

A full induction process, including necessary technology training, will be provided on appointment followed by ongoing training and support.

Meetings of The Governing board take place five times a year. Prior to COVID 19 they were held at the College but are currently being held via TEAMS. In addition, there are committee meetings for those governors willing and able to join one or more of them. All meetings are held after 5.00pm and generally last for between one to two hours. Commitment to attend meetings and engage with Board business is essential.
