New Skills Work Academy Offers Valuable Solution to NHS Staff Shortage

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust Hospital

The new Skills-Based Work Academy in Hartlepool, developed by ourselves and partners, is providing a valuable solution to North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust's difficulties in recruiting administrative support staff. In collaboration with Jobcentre Plus, the College's adult education programme is helping to boost the Single Point of Access team by providing on-the-job training and qualifications to candidates.

The academy is part of the Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) and involves completing a five-day introductory administration course here at Hartlepool College followed by work experience with the NHS Trust. Candidates who complete a Level 1 qualification in business administration are guaranteed a job interview. Lydia Gooding and Kieran Kitching have successfully completed the program and started their Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeships.

The Single Point of Access admin team at the NHS Trust provides a first point of contact for adults seeking community nursing and therapy services in the Stockton and Hartlepool areas. It handles approximately 100,000 calls and referrals every year. The NHS Trust has been impressed with the new staff members' attitude and eagerness to learn and hopes more candidates will follow in their footsteps.

The apprenticeship offers a wide range of training in different administrative and clinical systems, as well as exposure to the different services within the Trust in both hospital and community settings. This will provide valuable skills and knowledge for the apprentices' future careers in the NHS and open up new career paths and opportunities.

Maria Archbold, the Head of School for Professional and Creative Studies, here at Hartlepool College, said, "We are proud to have helped such an important organisation in our town and the wider Tees Valley with their recruitment needs. If anyone is interested in a similar administrative opportunity, they can contact Sam-Amy Kidson at the College to join the next course."

Angela McMurray, the Single Point Access Manager for the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, added, "The support, advice and help from Hartlepool College has been great. The apprenticeship covers a wide range of training and opens up many different career paths and opportunities in the NHS."
