"From feeling “stagnant in my job” to being “enrolled on the course of my dreams in a place I’ve always wanted to live.” This is the change Bernice Swift (26) has experienced in just one year when she took up the ‘challenge’ of an Access to Science course.
The former High Tunstall College of Science student had found herself longing for something different and with a desire to follow her passion Hartlepool College helped her transform her life. Bernice said “I found myself feeling stagnant in my job and wanted a new challenge, going back into education presented me with more opportunity for adventure. My love for diverse, mountainous landscapes and my interest in wildlife and environmental conservation lead me to an Ecology course at the University of Aberdeen.”
Bernice, credits the course and it’s wonderful tutors for her success, “My course was diverse and allowed me to explore many areas of science including chemistry, biology, human health and illness, microbiology and physics. My tutors took an interactive approach to learning. Classes were taught in a relaxed environment which encouraged discussion and communication, we would also gained lots of practical lab experience to truly get in-depth understanding of the subjects. I went in feeling I knew very little, but my tutors were passionate, supportive and insightful throughout which helped me leave with grades more than sufficient for getting into the university of my choice.”
After studying the Access to Science course at the college Bernice has enrolled on the ‘course of her dreams’ at Aberdeen University. This comes as no surprise to her tutor, Jane Skelton, “Bernice was a dream to teach. She has such a passion for Science that made her equally inquisitive as determined. We are all so proud of her, and the other students, that have took the brave step of retraining and following their dreams.”
