This programme is aimed at school leavers who wish to take their first steps on a path to a career in engineering and at learners who have completed the Level 1 Engineering programme and wish to progress to the next level of study within the mechanical/electrical engineering strand.
Prospective learners typically have, at minimum, 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including either Maths or English (preferably both) OR a Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Engineering.
Alternative entry qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
The Level 2 mechanical/electrical engineering programme consists of a Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Engineering and a mandatory tutorial session. Learners without a GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in English and/or Maths will be required to complete a suitable qualification in these areas alongside their engineering course.
The Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate has been designed to give learners the opportunity to develop a broad understanding, knowledge and skill set in the engineering sector, and support progression to more specialised vocational programmes-of-study at Level 3.
Learners will complete units covering principles of the engineering world, considerations made when engineering a product, interpretation of engineering information, use of maths in engineering, health & safety, maintenance & assembly, machining techniques, electronic circuit design and construction and electrical & mechanical science.
The mandatory tutorial session will allow learners to interact with their assigned tutor for progress and development, as well as engage with the Hartlepool College of Further Education tutorial programme.
A variety of teaching strategies will be employed in delivering this qualification, dependant upon the unit content. This may include lectures, seminars, practical work, simulated work environments and group activities.
Teaching and learning activities will take place in a range of specialist facilities, laboratories and classrooms.
The programme is delivered on a full-time basis; classes will be taught Monday to Friday.
Assessment is at unit-level and is a combination of coursework and examinations. Eight units are assessed exclusively by in-course assignments. One unit is assessed using a written exam. One unit is assessed using an online exam.
The overall qualification will be graded between a P (pass) and D (distinction), based on the combination of the individual unit outcomes. Learners not meeting the minimum threshold for a P grade may be entitled to a consolatory "Level 1 Pass" if certain criteria are met, otherwise they will receive a U (unclassified) grade.
Upon successful completion of the programme of study, together with the endorsement of the course team, learners will hold a qualification that will enable them to progress to Level 3 study and beyond.

- Level 3 Aeronautical Engineering (Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to learners for use
in the workshop.
