The Health and Social Care sector covers more than caring for people who are ill. It offers many different job
opportunities in the NHS, care sector and social work.
This course is aimed at school leavers or students progressing from a suitable level 2 programme who may wish to
enter into an apprenticeship, employment or higher education to study a degree in nursing, social work and other health and care related degrees.
Students must have a minimum: 5 GCSE's at grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics or an equivalent qualification such as the BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care.
Students will be studying a range of health and social care related units such as human development, working in the
health and social care sector and public health. The units require applied learning that brings together knowledge and
understanding with practical and technical skills. Students will develop essential transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis which are valued in both higher education and the workplace.
Work experience is a compulsory part of this course.
Students' teaching is class room based but also in our fully-functioning hospital ward with three beds and a nursing
station. The facilities also provide a care setting with bed, working kitchen and bathroom to enable students to
understand the requirements for domiciliary care.
Students are expected to attend all timetabled sessions which cover the different units and tutorials. But students
will also spend time on self-study to review class notes, prepare coursework assignments, work on projects and
revise for exams.
Students are further expected to attend work placements which usually takes place as a one or two-week block
period.
Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of work-relatedcontexts and assessments:
- work-related assingments such as essays, reports, case studies, research projects
- written exams
All units have to be completed to gain the overall grade and qualification
The qualifications provide the opportunity to progress directly into employment with a health and social care provider
or into an apprenticeship with an employer.
The qualifications are fully recognised by UCAS and will provide the students with the opportunity to progress into
Higher Education to study on Degree courses such as nursing, social work and other health and care related
degrees.
