On Tuesday night we celebrated and awarded 9 fantastic students for their achievement in Literacy over the last academic year, under the umbrella of the SHINE initiative. The awards were presented by Jonny Kay, our Head of Maths and English. Also in attendance were family, friends, our ace Maths and English lecturers and our Principal, Darren Hankey who welcomed all to the event.
The SHINE initiative's mission is to raise the attainment of students from across the Northern region so that they can turn their potential into success at school, college and beyond. This is achieved by identifying, funding and supporting teachers and charity partners with innovative solutions where education is a challenge.
Well done to Award winners: Zofia Wrobel, Bethany Wright, Ellie Davies, Faye Hendry, Alexander Lott, Charlee Garbutt, Hannah Buckle, Connor Kelsey and Kyla Hall
Darren Hankey, our Principal said. “The College has a long and well-established track record of enhancing students’ literacy levels and academic achievements. The Shine initiative provided students with a wonderful opportunity to develop their writing skills and some of the work was of very high quality. The students can be rightly proud of their achievements”.
Jonny Kay, Head of Maths and English, concluded 'More and more, young people are turning away from writing with pen and paper and nearly everything they write is on a device of some sort. By starting their own creative journals, in which they can talk about anything they want, we hope to reverse this trend and give them a real joy for writing'.
The College hopes and looks to make this an annual event to reward our students in both Literacy and Numeracy in the future, why not apply for a Maths and English course yourself >> http://bit.ly/hcfemateng
