Target audience 

This course is aimed at learners that are employed within the building services engineering industry as technicians or trade/craft persons in the vocational areas of electrical and mechanical installation, electrical and mechanical design, estimating, supervision or management, building services engineering contracting, heating and ventilation or refrigeration.

Additionally learners will have gained suitable experience and/or qualifications.

Learners may wish to progress into a specialist area of building services engineering or enhance their prospect of promotion within the industry.

Entry requirements 

  • Ideally employed within the industry
  • An appropriate technician or craft qualification at level 3 or similar eg 'A' levels
  • Ideally GCSE Grade 4 or higher in English and Mathematics
  • A successful interview
  • Learners must be at least 19 years old
  • Course content 

    All core modules Franchised and Validated HNC Building Services Engineering at HCFE

    Part Time:

    YEAR 1 (modules will be delivered at Hartlepool College of Further Education)

    • Building Technology
    • Mathematics for Construction
    • Construction Science & Materials
    • Construction Practice & Management

    YEAR 2 (modules will be delivered at Teesside University Middlesbrough campus)

    • Principles of Heating Services Design & Installation
    • Principles of Electrical Design & Installation
    • Individual Project
    • Principles of Ventilation & Airconditioning
    Assessment criteria 

    Learners will complete coursework, research, investigation, written reports, presentations, test papers and practical exercises dependent upon the module content as part of the assessment process.

    All assessments are graded on the basis of Pass, Merit and Distinction against assessment criteria. These provide an overall single grade for each subject module.

    Progression 

    Learners wishing to study further higher education qualifications can progress to part-time and full-time degree level courses at University.

    Other information 

    This is an award of Teesside University delivered in partnership with HCFE.
    Learners must have good time management skills and work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, research and assessment work to be successful in this qualification.
