Target audience 

The target audience for the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors) is learners who are 16 years or older and have a strong interest in sport, physical activity, and outdoor adventure.  This course is aimed at students who want to develop advanced practical skills and theoretical knowledge in outdoor sport and leisure, and who are considering careers or higher education in sport, outdoor leadership, coaching, or adventure activities. 

* It is particularly suitable for learners who:
* Enjoy practical, hands-on learning rather than purely academic study
* Have already completed a Level 2 qualification in sport, outdoor education or a related subject
* Want to build skills in leadership. teamwork, and activity planning within outdoor and adventurous settings
* Are motivated to pursue higher education, apprenticeships or employment in the sport, leisure, or outdoor activity sectors

In short, the course is designed for active, motivated learners who wish to combine sport, outdoor adventure, and leadership skills into a pathway for further study or career opportunities.

 

Entry requirements 

Learners need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (previously c) or above, including English and Maths, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification.

Course content 

The curriculum covers a broad range of topics to support learners' development in sport and outdoor activity practice.  Learners explore subjects such as:

* Exercise, health and lifestyle, which builds an understanding of fitness, wellbeing, and performance.

* Careers in sport and physical activity, helping learners plan their future pathways.

* Principles and practices in outdoor adventure, including leadership and risk management.

* Skills for land-based and water-based activities

* Psychology in sports performance and sports nutrition

* Leading activity sessions, organising events, and understanding impact and sustainability in outdoor environments.

* Practical team sports and individual sport skills.

This varied content equips learners with a strong foundation across both physical performance and activity leadership within outdoor setting

Teaching & Learning 

Teaching in this course combines classroom-based study with practical learning. Learners are taught through a mixture of written assignments, group discussions, observations in real-life activities, practical leadership tasks, and presentations. The practical element is significant, ensuring learners develop hands-on experience in outdoor pursuits as they apply theoretical knowledge in real situations.

Assessment criteria 

Assessment is mostly internal and ongoing. It includes written work, practical work, practical assessments, observations, and presentations rather than traditional formal exams. This approach allows learners to build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating their skills and understanding over time.

Progression 

Further Education

University degrees in Sport, Outdoor Leadership, Adventure Education, or Sports Science.  Because this qualification carries UCAS points, learners are able to use it when applying to university through the UCAS system, helping them gain places on relevant undergraduate programmes.

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course.
