HCFE Litter Pick staff and students
Our fantastic staff and students, litter picking around the College, #GreenDay (May 2020)

We are not only transforming lives here are Hartlepool College but #doingourbit to transform our environment for a better future too, and our work on sustainability has got off to a flying start.

Buoyed by the Climate Action Roadmap for Further Education the college has established a committee and is in the process of engaging with a firm to establish our current carbon footprint.

The college’s first GreenDay took place in May 2020 among other things, staff and students were encouraged to leave their cars at home and no plastic food/drink packaging was sold during that day.

Also, students and stakeholders at the College that day will be encouraged to wear their finest green attire and donate £1 to The National Trusts - Plant a Tree initiative.

Building on the Climate Action Roadmap for FE and our activities for GreenDay, we have been #doingourbit for sustainability and to decrease our carbon footprint and are as follows;

  • Commissioned a report on our carbon footprint (results pending)
  • Changed many halogen light bulbs for LED ones
  • Charged extra for single-use food and drink containers
  • Removed all plastic bottles for water and soft drinks to recyclable cans
  • Use the College electric vehicle for local trips
  • Two College-wide litter picks
  • Analyzed, our waste <0.1% to landfill.
  • Installed tea towels in staff centre kitchens to reduce the use of paper towels
  • Use compostable takeaway containers, cups, and cutlery
  • Water drinking bottles were also given out during freshers
  • Secure confidential shredding facility – all shredded paper is 100% recycled
  • All cardboard and paper waste is recycled
  • Other waste is repurposed, reused or recycled.

And we plan to do a bit more too;

  • Installing EV charging points
  • Looking to replace all halogen bulbs with LEDs

So week commencing 23rd May this year, we will be highlighting what we have done and what we plan to do across our social channels, and on Wednesday 25th May at 10 am and 2 pm we will be taking part in a litter pick around the College grounds as part of the Big Town Tidy Up (Hartlepool) initiative, and on Friday 27th, students, staff and stakeholders at will be encouraged to wear their finest green attire and donate £1 to The National Trusts - Plant a Tree initiative.
