Ryan Robinson began his journey at Hartlepool College of Further Education as a Level 1 automotive student. Now, at 24, he’s workshop manager at Autofab—and being tipped by his employer as the garage’s potential future owner.
Ryan joined Autofab as an 18-year-old apprentice. His commitment and ability quickly earned the trust of owner Marc Wrigglesworth, who first spotted Ryan’s potential during a College work placement. “Ryan had the ability,” said Marc. “He stood out to me and the College straight away.”
Since then, Ryan has climbed the ranks, gaining hands-on experience and now mentoring the next generation of apprentices, including 17-year-old Ben Maddison. Ben, a former Dyke House Academy student, followed a similar route—starting with work experience before securing an apprenticeship. He’s now developing his skills under Ryan’s guidance. “It feels mad to be the teacher now,” said Ryan. “I’m still learning, you never stop—but I’ve been through it. I want to help Ben avoid the mistakes, I made and develop confidence in what he’s doing.” Ben agrees. “It’s amazing to be working with Ryan. We’re like pals… if I’m stuck, he’ll always help—whether it’s in the garage or with College work.”
Ryan, who went to Manor Academy, credits his College experience for building his confidence and shaping his career. “This has brought me on as a person. I came in just expecting to do work experience. I impressed during that time and was offered an apprenticeship—same as Ben has since.” Marc is clear about Ryan’s value to the business. “He’s conscientious and enjoys responsibility. I can see him taking over Autofab one day.”
Michael White, automotive lecturer at Hartlepool College, has taught both Ryan and Ben. “Ryan started at Level 1 and stuck with it. He worked hard and developed the right knowledge, skills and attitude. Now Ben is showing the same.”
Autofab has worked with the College for two decades and has supported six apprentices over that time. “We’ve been at Burbank Street in Hartlepool for 25 years,” said Marc. “Finding the right candidates isn’t always easy, especially in the motor trade. But the partnership with the College works. Ryan and Ben are proof of that.”
