Hartlepool College Student Receives Prestigious National Award

Event Date
Friday, 24 April, 2026

Hartlepool College is celebrating after engineering student Dylan Coulson received a prestigious award at the City and Guilds of London Institute's Awards and Livery Company Prizes ceremony, held at Mansion House earlier in March.

Dylan, who studied the T Level Technical Qualification in Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing at Hartlepool College, was presented with the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers prize by the Rt Hon The Lady Mayor, Dame Susan Langley DBE, in recognition of his exceptional performance throughout his studies.

Achieving an overall Distinction, Dylan stood out not only for his technical ability and consistently high performance but also for a three-week international industry placement in Salerno, Italy, an experience that earned him commendation from his host employer for his maturity, adaptability, and professionalism. This placement was in part supported by the government's Turing Scheme, which enabled learners to apply their subject knowledge to international industries and contexts and develop a global perspective of their career pathways.

Since completing his T Level, Dylan has gone on to secure a Technical Apprenticeship with Cummins and has begun HNC study, demonstrating a continued commitment to excellence as an emerging engineering professional.

Mark Elliott, Head of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering at Hartlepool College, said: "Dylan is a highly studious, diligent and hardworking student who has consistently demonstrated a mature and focused approach to his studies. He has been a pleasure to teach, always engaging positively in lessons and showing a genuine commitment to developing his knowledge and skills. His dedication and resilience have enabled him to achieve an outstanding Distinction grade in his T Level qualification, reflecting both his academic ability and strong work ethic. Dylan is a credit to the programme and has a very bright future ahead."

Dylan said of his achievement: "I'm proud to achieve this award and found the experience to be fantastic. It was a big occasion and it was an honour to be invited to such an event and receive the award. During my two years at the college I was given the support and knowledge I needed for my future in engineering. I am grateful to all the lecturers who guided me through the course. I'm now employed at Cummins which is a dream come true; I look forward to where I progress in the years to come."

The award was presented as part of the City and Guilds MCGI Awards, which celebrate tutors, trainers and learners operating at the highest levels across the UK and Ireland. Nick Macrae, Master of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers, added: "The Needlemakers livery is a founding member of the City and Guilds Institute and have a seat on their Council. So it was a great pleasure for Liveryman Philip Grant and I to meet Dylan and Mark at the Awards Ceremony, and to be able to congratulate Dylan as he received his award. We enjoyed chatting about his overseas placement in Italy, his enthusiasm for engineering and plans for the future. We wish him all the best."
