Hartlepool College of Further Education hosted a very special Remembrance Service on Friday 9 November to commemorate those who lost their lives in conflicts around the world.
Guests attended the 12th annual service including a rendition of the Last Post and a war-time themed three-course meal in the College’s Flagship restaurant.
The service was attended by veterans, students and local dignitaries including councillor Allan Barclay, Mayor of Hartlepool, and MP Mike Hill.
Darren Hankey, Principal of Hartlepool College of Further Education, said: “Ultimately at the College, it’s not just about gaining qualification it’s about education.
“To compliment students’ studies, we have a respect platform that includes a wide variety of things throughout the academic year.
“One of those events is our Remembrance Service where we invite veterans and people still serving in the armed forces into the College.
“It’s about showing students how important it is to recognise that wars have taken place for their freedoms and to mark those sacrifices.”
The special service marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, which saw the death of nine million combatants and seven million civilians from 1914 – 1918.
Mike Hill MP, said: “This is the second time I’ve attended this occasion at Hartlepool College of Further Education. It’s a very poignant ceremony but also very diverse in its commemoration of the Great War and all wars.
“Young people lost their lives in the Great War, reflecting by and large, the ages of the young people taking part in this service from the College. That’s what really strikes home. When you see young people delivering a ceremony such as this.”
