A Shining Example of Apprenticeship Success

Maddie Williams with her Award and Certificate from Intelect
Maddie Williams at Hartlepool College with her Award and Certificate from Intelect.

At just 23 years old, Maddie Williams is making a big impact in her apprenticeship journey. Currently working as a Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Apprentice at Intelect, Maddie has been named Intelect's Apprentice of the Year for 2024. Her work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to learning have set her apart from over 20 apprentices across a range of trades.

Maddie’s role has seen her take on real responsibility, managing health, safety, and environmental duties on a live construction site. Acting as site safety manager for a project at PPG Industries, she issued permits for high-risk activities, reviewed Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), conducted weekly audits, and led toolbox talks. She also worked closely with clients through regular progress meetings, showcasing her skills in communication and coordination.

Alongside her site work, Maddie has achieved the Site Manager Safety Training Award, becoming Intelect’s youngest employee to earn this qualification. Her educational journey started with a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering at Hartlepool College of Further Education, followed by an HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Teesside University. She is now preparing to join a larger health and safety team at a different site, where she will continue to build her knowledge and experience.

Cliff Downs (Lecturer in Employer Services HCFE) stated, "In delivering Maddie's Safety Health and Environment Technician apprenticeship, I have found Maddie to be a student who has shown exemplary communication skills ,very able to adapt to different audiences. She has demonstrated a fearless approach to learning new skills and acquiring new knowledge in her expertise. I am excited to see what Maddie achieves in the future as I am certain she will go from strength to strength."

Maddie also finds time to give back by inspiring the next generation. During an Engineering Insight Day, she shared her experiences with students, encouraging them to consider careers in engineering. Her journey is a clear example of where dedication and hard work can lead, and she stands as a proud role model for current and future learners here at Hartlepool College of Further Education.
