Target audience 

This course provides an introduction to teaching and training. It is for those intending to teach in Further Education colleges, independent training providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations. You do not need to be working in a teaching role to complete this course. It is an ideal taster for anyone interested in teaching in the Lifelong sector (age 14+) which includes colleges, adult education and work-based training.

Entry requirements 
  • It is recommended to hold Level 2 qualifications in Mathematics and English Language, but the latter is essential
  • Candidates must be willing to undertake an initial assessment of their skills in English, record their development needs and follow an action plan to address them where necessary
  • The minimum age requirement for the Award in Education and Training is 18 years
Course content 

The content on this course covers topics which focus on the key principles and practices of teaching and learning in lifelong learning (age 14+). Topics include:

  • Roles and responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Understanding assessment in education and training
  • Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

The course is classroom based. Weekly sessions are delivered by experienced tutors who will demonstrate best practice in the delivery of the course content. This course is designed to encourage learners to acquire knowledge and skills which are an essential foundation for being an effective practitioner.

Assessment criteria 

To pass the Level 3 Award you will need to complete a number of short written assignments and undertake a short teaching session (micro teach) for the other students in your group and your tutor.


On successful completion, students can progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.

Other information 

There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework and assessment tasks. Please think carefully before undertaking a course of this nature as it is demanding and students will need to consider their work, family and other commitments. An interview is required to be accepted onto the programme.

You are able to apply online for all courses, however to complete your course enrolment fully, you will need to have an interview and then be accepted onto a course.
