We are extremely proud of Hartlepool College student Jack Wallace who has recently represented the England Schools FA in the prestigious Centenary Shield. Jack, an 18-year-old Level 3 BTEC Sports Coaching student enrolled in our Hartlepool United Academy Programme, 'Hart of Our Club,' has previously impressed in friendlies for England and we are excited that he has made his first competitive debut.
Jack reflected on this outstanding achievement before the game: “I honestly can’t wait to get started for real and show what I can do. It’s a dream come true to represent my country, even in the friendlies we’ve played so far. I never imagined this – I didn’t even think I’d play for my county, never mind my country! My whole family is so proud, especially my mam, Wendy, who was in tears when she found out.”
Jack’s journey to the national stage has been remarkable. He battled through a rigorous three-trial selection process, earning his place as the only Hartlepool representative in the final 18-man squad. He made an immediate impact, earning Man of the Match recognition from the opposition head coach in his debut against Australia, where he came off the bench. Jack described the experience of playing in front of passionate fans and signing autographs as “surreal” and the “best experience” of his life.
Just last week, Jack and the England squad trained at St George’s Park, taking on Independent Schools FA and Wigan Athletic as part of their preparations. Now, his focus is firmly on the Centenary Shield, with fixtures lined up against Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
Our Head of High-Performance Sport, Ian Clark, congratulates Jack on his well-deserved call-up, having seen the Sports Coaching student’s determination first-hand.
“Jack has worked incredibly hard for this opportunity,” said Ian. “His work rate, attitude, and desire to develop himself are second to none. He embraces every opportunity and never shies away from personal responsibility. He deserves everything he’s achieved.”
Jack’s footballing journey started at grass-roots level with Greatham FC. A friend’s invitation led him to Pools Youth, where he progressed to the first team. Jack credits our scholarship programme, delivered in partnership with Hartlepool United, with playing a key role in his recent development, as well as the coaches who encouraged him to try out for the England Schools trials.
“When I left school, I didn’t know which college to go to,” Jack admitted. “Then I found out about this scholarship programme partnered with Hartlepool United and decided to give it a go. I’ve loved every moment of it. Midway through last season, my coach Ethan Wood and Ian Clark spoke to me about putting me forward for the England Schools trials. My county also backed me. I’m so pleased they did.”
Our football programme, which provides a structured and competitive training environment alongside academic study, has been instrumental in Jack’s development. Alongside his training with the professional club’s scholars’ team, he is completing a Level 3 BTEC in Sports Coaching, learning valuable skills in coaching techniques and sports nutrition.
Ian, who is a former Pools winger, believes Jack’s success highlights the strength of our partnership with Hartlepool United.
“This call-up reinforces just how strong our football programme is,” Ian said. “Huge credit goes to our Head Coach, Ethan Wood, because we’ve now had five England internationals since this programme started – three in the last three seasons. Oscar Fletcher is now thriving at Redcar Athletic, Archie Small has signed a contract with Darlington, and now Jack is making his mark. They’re all proof that we’re providing a professional platform and environment where young players can shine. Our programme doesn’t just develop footballers – it teaches them the importance of hard work and responsibility, traits that will serve them well in whatever path they take.”
Jack’s journey is just beginning, and everyone at Hartlepool College of Further Education is immensely proud to see him represent England. We can’t wait to see him shine on the international stage!
