Building Services Success

A group of construction students showed off their talents to judges in a high-profile competition which gave them the chance to show their understanding of the sector.

Six BTEC Level 3 students from Hartlepool College of Further Education, who are doing a diploma in Construction & Built Environment, entered a day-long competition run by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Having won the event last year, Hartlepool College was given the honour of hosting this year’s final and home advantage counted as they beat off teams from New College Durham, Redcar College and Middlesbrough College to win the main award. The competition saw the teams working on a plan centred around Morison Hall, on Hartlepool’s Headland, and they were all asked to consider risks attached to things like environment, health and safety and noise pollution on a refurbishment project.

Lecturer David Johnson said: “It was a very intense competition run over the course of the day. The teams were given a small insight into what their task would be the day before, then on the morning they were given a further briefing. They then set about working on the projects, gathered around a table with all of the requirements in front of them and access to a PC for research purposes. There were mentors who work within the construction sector walking around the room offering advice as and when it was needed to help the teams along, and when their project was finished they had 15 minutes to go into a room with the judging panel to present their findings. All of the teams worked very well both individually and collectively, and obviously we were delighted that we were able to take the award as the host college.”

The Hartlepool College team was made up of Jack Anderson, James Kemp, Drew Tyrell, Louisa Phillips, Jack Ainscough and Luke Morgan.

While the team won the main award, Drew Tyrell was named as the student of the day.

Lesley Fairley, Inspection Manager at NHBC (National House Builders Council) and a former regional chair of the CIOB, was part of the judging panel.

She said: “This event brought together professional organisations, education providers and current industry professionals to offer construction students a challenging and interactive learning experience in the region. We saw some really great work from the students and it was a real challenge for the judges to choose a winner. Our congratulations go to Hartlepool College of Further Education and we wish all participants every success for the future.”

The college is one of the largest providers of apprenticeships in the North East and has apprenticeship success rates well above the national average.

Hartlepool College has almost 500 16-18-year-old apprentices working with a multitude of employers across the region each of which are convinced that engaging apprentices is the way forward to develop their business.
