Money saving engineering project

An Engineering student has received top honours after designing a system which will save a steel firm thousands of pounds a year. Hartlepool College of Further Education student Conor Joyce, 22, has won the prestigious Award for Excellence at the Institute of Engineering and Technology Awards ceremony.

The award came thanks to Conor’s project to install an inverter drive to a hydraulic system for apprenticeship provider Tata Steel. The drive can be programmed and monitored by computer software. It now saves the company £7,000 per year and will also be installed at Tata Steel facilities across the country. The latest honour means the college has now won an award with the Institute for nine consecutive years.

Conor, who studies electrical engineering at the college, said: “It was a nice surprise to find out that I was one of three winners on the night, and to be linked with the institute is an honour.” Conor is in his final year at the college and has achieved distinctions in every unit of his studies across the last three years. The lecturers within the engineering department put Conor forward after seeing his dedication to his course.

Michael Casey, head of engineering at Hartlepool College of Further Education, said: “The facilities and training we provide in partnership with companies such as Tata is well received by local industry and equips our students to continue their studies further and prepare them for the workplace. Conor is an outstanding student and it has been a delight to watch him excel in this course.”
